Manitoba: Where the Wild Still Feels Wild

Video: A wide-open look at Manitoba’s outdoor opportunities and why it’s a sportsman’s paradise.

There are places you go… and then there are places that stay with you.

Manitoba is one of those places.

From the moment we rolled into camp, you could feel it. That quiet, expansive, almost untouched energy that tells you you’re somewhere special. For me, this wasn’t just another trip—it was a bucket list adventure I’ve been thinking about since I was a kid. A chance to chase a true trophy whitetail, sure—but also to experience everything that makes Manitoba one of the most underrated outdoor destinations in North America.

A Fisheries Playground Like No Other

Before we ever climbed into a stand, we were already talking fishing—and for good reason. Manitoba isn’t just a hunting destination. It’s a full-blown multi-species playground.

You’ve got places like Baker’s Narrows, where the original mission might be lake trout, but then you stumble into aggressive, trophy-class northern pike that absolutely wreck your expectations. Or Kew Lake, where it’s not just about catching walleyes—it’s about catching big walleyes, over and over again, in a way that makes you rethink what “good fishing” really means.

And then there’s the Red River.

If you’ve never tangled with giant channel catfish, you owe it to yourself. We’re talking fish that push 20–25 pounds consistently. It’s not just fishing—it’s a grind, a tug-of-war, and honestly, one of the most addictive bites you’ll ever experience.

Lake Winnipeg: Hunting Giants, Not Just Fishing

You can’t talk about Manitoba without talking about Lake Winnipeg.

This place is massive—300 miles long, 60 miles wide—and it fishes just as big as it looks. The walleyes here, the famous “greenbacks,” are something else entirely. Their color, their size, their power—it’s like they belong to a different world.

But here’s the deal: you don’t just fish Lake Winnipeg.

You hunt it.

These fish roam. They move. They demand that you stay mobile, especially in the winter. Drill holes, cover water, stay aggressive—and when you find them, it’s game on. That’s what makes this place so special. It rewards effort.

The Shift: From Rod to Rifle

As incredible as the fishing is, this trip had a different mission.

Whitetails.

Northern Manitoba is one of the best-kept secrets in the whitetail world. Big country. Low pressure. Genetics that produce absolute giants. When you combine that with a cold front and fresh snow, you’ve got the perfect storm for deer movement.

And that’s exactly what we walked into.

At North Mountain Adventures, everything is dialed. This is a family-run operation that’s built the right way—attention to detail, great accommodations, and a system that puts you in the right spots. Whether you’re sitting edge fields, creek bottoms near Riding Mountain, or deep in the timber, you’re hunting where deer live.

The Grind of the Rut

Day one set the tone.

Ten minutes into the stand—boom—a solid 10-point steps out. Back home in Minnesota, that’s a deer you think long and hard about. But up here? You know there are giants. So you wait.

That’s the mental game of Manitoba.

You see deer. Lots of deer. Does, smaller bucks, mid-range bucks. But you’re holding out, knowing that at any moment, something special could step out.

Then came the wind.

30–40 mph gusts. Tough conditions. Deer movement slows. You grind it out. Morning sits, evening sits, long hours watching fields and timber edges.

And then… it changes.

The wind dies. The woods settle. The rut kicks back in.

The Moment You Came For

It always happens fast.

That last hour—the “witching hour.” Does start filtering out. Bucks get restless. Movement builds.

Then you hear it.

“Big buck.”

You look up—and there he is.

One of those deer that instantly tells you everything you need to know. No hesitation. No second guessing.

That’s the moment every hunter lives for.

And just like that… it’s over.

A week of effort. Weather battles. Long sits. All culminating in one perfect opportunity—and a clean, successful hunt.

Why Manitoba Should Be on Your List

Here’s the bottom line.

Manitoba isn’t just good at one thing—it’s elite at everything.

  • World-class walleye fisheries
  • Giant pike and lake trout opportunities
  • Legendary catfish waters
  • And some of the best whitetail hunting on the continent

It’s a place where you can truly build a trip around your passion—or stack multiple adventures into one unforgettable experience.

And maybe more importantly, it’s a place that still feels wild.

Unpressured. Untouched. Real.

If you’re the kind of outdoorsman who wants more than just a trip—if you want an experience that pushes you, excites you, and sticks with you long after you leave—Manitoba delivers.

Fishing. Hunting. Adventure.

It’s all here.

And trust me… it’s worth the trip.
