The Annual Physical: A Familiar Routine

Every year, like clockwork, I go in for my annual wellness physical. At this point, I know the routine like the back of my hand—blood work, a check on the eyes and ears, the full rundown.

This year, just like last, I’ve already ticked off my visits to the dentist and the eye doctor. Now it’s time to wrap it all up with the physician.

I feel pretty good going into it—not expecting anything negative. But if past experience is any indication, I know there’ll be at least a few things to keep an eye on.

The Doctor’s Advice: Cutting Back on the Comforts

Last year, the doctor gave me a few things to think about. Nothing major—just some areas where things were a little off. And, as usual, the conversation turned to diet.

He said I could probably ease up on the pasta. I admitted, yeah, I do like pasta. Then came the mashed potatoes and gravy—another one of my favorites. He advised me to maybe cut back there too. Fair enough. He told me I’m healthy, and he wants to help me stay that way. So I listened.
But then—then came the bread.

Bread: The Non-Negotiable

Now, I could handle giving up a little pasta. I could deal with reducing the mashed potatoes. But bread? That’s where I draw the line. I love bread. All kinds of bread. Toasted, warm, crusty, soft—I’ll take it any way it comes.

And not just occasionally. I have bread with everything—breakfast, lunch, and dinner. With steak, with soup, as a snack. Bread is non-negotiable.

So I told him, “I’m going to follow Jesus’s wellness plan.”

Jesus’s Diet Plan: Bread, Fish, and Fruit

Think about it—Jesus and his disciples did pretty well. And what did they eat? Bread, fish, and fruit. Simple, nourishing, and satisfying. That’s a plan I can get behind.

So I told my doctor, I’m sticking with that. Bread, fish, fruit. That’s the foundation. And I’ll bet that when I come back next year, I’ll still be in good shape.

Because sometimes, the answers really are that simple. Everything you need to know about life—you can find it right there in the Good Book. Jesus had it figured out.

A Bit of Humor, A Bit of Truth

I had to share that with you—not just for the laugh, though I hope it gave you one—but also because there’s a little truth in it. We all have things we love, and balance is the key. Wellness isn’t about giving up everything you enjoy; it’s about knowing what matters and making wise choices.

From all of us here at The Edge, have a great, safe fishing season.
We’ll see you on the water.
