Fishing big lakes in Canada that you’ve never navigated before can be intimidating and slightly overwhelming. Not only are the lakes expansive, but most spots look so good that it’s hard to wrap your head around here to start. Like any good lodge, the Q Lake staff offered great insight into what the fish have been doing. When we approach a new lake, we often start shallow and work deeper; trolling is a great way to learn water quickly and fish at the same time.
At Q Lake Lodge, the walleyes can be found in both shallow and deep water — especially during the spring-to-summer transition. To cover all their bases, Smith and Simpson brought a variety of walleye tackle and gear. They mention using Rapala Rippin’ Raps, Tail Dancers, Jigging Raps, Shad Raps, and Jigs rigged with softbaits. However, they find that the VMC Mooneye jig and a Big Bite Bait Sensation Slim Minnow outperform all other lure options. These baits can be fished shallow, dragged off the break, or vertically fished in deep water, making them incredibly versatile.
According to Simpson: “Again, when fishing a new lake, a good rule of thumb is to start from the shallows and your way out to deeper water. On Q Lake we noticed that the fish caught in the shallows are generally smaller in size, while the fish in deeper water are larger. We found the biggest average walleye size in the 15- to 25-ft depth range. However, they mention that there are fish at all levels of the lake.”
Smith is amazed by the technology they have at their disposal, specifically the Humminbird Mega Live setup with forward-facing sonar. His favorite way to scan for fish is to use the trolling motor head to scan the water ahead of them as they approach structures. This allows them to see fish in real-time and make accurate casts to the pods of fish.
Jer and Jeff have an incredible day of fishing at Q Lake Lodge, catching walleyes nonstop with estimates of easily catching over 100 fish each day. They attribute their success to the combination of the right baits, the use of forward-facing sonar, and their versatile fishing techniques.
