Handle Big Muskies the Right Way: The Tools Every Muskie Angler Should Have
Setting Up the Daiwa ProRex for Musky Fishing: A Purpose-Built System for Big Fish

Setting Up the Daiwa ProRex for Musky Fishing: A Purpose-Built System for Big Fish

When you’re chasing muskies in late summer and early fall, there’s no room for shortcuts. Big fish demand big equipment, and when you’re casting oversized bucktails, giant rubber baits, topwaters, and heavy spinnerbaits from sunrise until sunset, every piece of your setup has to work together.

That’s exactly why I’ve been spending a lot of time with the Daiwa ProRex musky series. For years, musky anglers adapted reels that were originally designed for other fisheries. Saltwater reels, oversized bass reels, and heavy-duty conventional reels all got pressed into musky service simply because there wasn’t a reel built specifically for freshwater apex predators.

The ProRex changes that.

Start with the Right Rod

When I’m fishing weeds, cabbage beds, timber, rock structure, or heavy cover during late summer and fall, my first choice is a 9-foot Heavy Power, Fast Action rod.

That rod length does a lot of things well.

The extra length launches big baits farther, which means more water covered with every cast. Longer casts also keep your lure in the strike zone longer, giving following muskies more opportunities to commit.

A heavy-power blank has the backbone needed to throw today’s larger musky presentations without feeling overloaded. Whether you’re casting oversized bucktails, giant soft plastics, heavy spinnerbaits, or loud topwater baits, the rod loads properly and delivers the lure efficiently.

Just as importantly, that heavy power becomes a huge advantage once the fish bites.

Big muskies rarely cooperate. They’re diving into cabbage, bulldogging into wood, or using every ounce of their strength to reach heavy cover. A powerful rod gives you the leverage necessary to steer fish away from trouble while maintaining constant pressure.

It’s one setup that truly handles almost everything you’ll throw at muskies throughout the season.

Pair It with a Reel Built Specifically for Muskies

The biggest difference in this setup is the reel.

The Daiwa ProRex isn’t simply another reel borrowed from another category. Daiwa designed this family specifically around freshwater trophy fish like muskies.

That’s significant.

For decades, musky anglers accepted compromises. Manufacturers would build reels for saltwater or other heavy-duty applications, and musky fishermen would simply adapt them.

The ProRex family was engineered from the beginning with musky fishing in mind.

You immediately notice the compact profile, comfortable ergonomics, and distinctive purple accents that identify the ProRex lineup. It feels surprisingly manageable in your hand considering the power it delivers.

But looks aren’t what matter.

Performance is.

Choosing the Right Gear Ratio

One of the biggest decisions when selecting a musky reel is choosing the proper gear ratio.

During this trip, I’ve been fishing the 5.3:1 Power Gear model.

That means every complete turn of the handle rotates the spool 5.3 times.

In today’s world of high-speed reels, that may sound slow.

For many musky anglers, though, slower can actually be better.

Large double-bladed bucktails create tremendous resistance in the water. Add in hundreds—or even thousands—of casts during a full day on the water, and fatigue becomes a real factor.

The lower gear ratio creates significantly more torque.

Instead of fighting the lure every single retrieve, the reel does much of the work for you.

That extra power allows you to retrieve oversized blades comfortably while keeping a consistent speed. Your arms, shoulders, and wrists simply don’t wear down nearly as quickly.

If you’re like Jeremy Smith and spend countless days each season chasing muskies, efficiency matters. If you’re someone who fishes muskies occasionally, the benefit becomes even more obvious because the setup helps you fish comfortably all day instead of wearing yourself out after a few hours.

Fish Longer, Fish Better

One thing that’s easy to overlook is how much fatigue affects your fishing.

When your shoulders are burning and your forearms are exhausted, your retrieves become inconsistent.

Your figure-eights get sloppy.

Your hooksets lose power.

Your concentration fades.

Having the proper reel helps eliminate much of that fatigue.

Instead of constantly battling your equipment, you’re free to focus on making accurate casts, working your lure correctly, and staying mentally prepared for that one cast when a giant musky finally commits.

Sometimes the best piece of equipment isn’t the one that lets you fish faster.

It’s the one that lets you fish effectively from the first cast until the last.

A Balanced Musky System

One of the reasons this setup works so well is because every component complements the others.

  • 9-foot Heavy Power, Fast Action rod for casting distance, hook-setting power, and fish control.
  • Daiwa ProRex reel designed specifically for freshwater trophy predators.
  • 5.3:1 Power Gear ratio for maximum torque when retrieving high-resistance lures.
  • A balanced combination that excels with bucktails, oversized rubber baits, spinnerbaits, topwaters, and other large musky presentations.

It’s a setup that gives anglers confidence whether they’re fishing expansive weed flats, isolated rock structure, timber, or thick vegetation.

Musky fishing has always demanded specialized equipment, and today’s oversized lures only increase those demands. The right combination of rod length, power, action, and reel design can make a tremendous difference—not only in casting performance, but in how long you can fish effectively throughout the day.

The Daiwa ProRex family represents a major step forward because it was built specifically for what musky anglers ask of their equipment. Combined with a 9-foot Heavy Power, Fast Action rod, it creates a balanced system capable of handling nearly every presentation you’ll encounter during late summer and fall.

When the next giant follows your bait to the boat or explodes boatside on a figure-eight, you’ll appreciate having equipment that’s purpose-built for one thing—landing the fish of a lifetime.
