The equipment that we use is a lot like bass fishing, so rods, reels, and lures are all specifically designed for specific applications. St. Croix has done a great job with their line of rods in the musky world.
They have rods designed for throwing big plastics, rods perfect for bucktails, and rods great for throwing little jerk baits or smaller spinners. When we hit the water, we don’t just go out with one rod and reel to throw all the lures we have in the boat.
We actually carry a half a dozen rods each, just so that we have the right rod, reel, line, and leader for each specific application. This makes the baits perform better and ultimately helps us catch more fish. Muskie fishing is very technical, just like bass or walleye fishing. Getting the right rod, reel, line, and leader is crucial for success.
If someone asks me what kind of rod and reel they should get for muskie fishing, I would recommend a 9-foot medium-heavy power fast action rod. This length allows for long-distance casting and provides good leverage when fighting fish.
The medium-heavy power is versatile enough to handle both lighter and heavier baits. With a fast action, you can easily throw smaller baits like number eights. This rod can also work well for trolling. Overall, the medium-heavy power fast action rod offers versatility and is a great choice if you’re looking to buy just one rod and reel.
Timing is an important factor in muskie fishing. Sometimes the muskies shut off, but that doesn’t mean you can’t catch other fish. We take advantage of the fantastic walleye fishing when the muskies aren’t active.
We bring a variety of lures, including Rapala jigging wraps, VMC bucktail jigs, moon-eyed jigs, and middle profile plastics like the Big Bite jerk minnow or suicide shed. This allows us to cover different depths and lure presentations. The great thing about fishing in this area is that you don’t need live bait. The walleye fishing is so good that it’s like drive-through fast food.
When it comes to finding fish, a good fish finder is essential. We use a combination of 2D sonar and down imaging to locate walleyes. When we see a rise on the depth finder in the 20 to 30-foot range, we know there are walleyes there.
Lake Master is a great tool for navigation. While the Canadian lakes may not have HD contours, most hazards are marked, and you can still find shallow and deep water areas to fish. Having a good fish finder and navigation tool is crucial when fishing in the shield.
Boat control has come a long way with the advancements in technology. With a Minn Kota trolling motor, like the Altera, you can easily control your boat without having to get up and move around. The Altera allows you to self-deploy or put down the motor with just the push of a button on the depth finder.
This makes it much easier to stay in one spot and focus on catching fish. When we see a school of fish on the fish finder, we can quickly drop down our lures and start catching fish without worrying about holding the boat in one place. It’s a game-changer for muskie fishing.
Choosing the right rod is also important when fishing deep for muskies. I prefer using an extra-fast action rod with a length of 6’8″. This allows me to keep the rod close to me and have better control over the lure.
The extra-fast action provides a softer tip for better lure action, but still has a strong backbone for hooking fish in deep water. Using a longer, lighter rod may cause you to miss out on hooking those deep-water muskies. So, having the right rod with the right action is crucial for success.
After a day of walleye fishing, we were ready to switch gears and target muskies. We were joined by Linda Rice from Moosehorn Lodge, who is a world record holder in the female division for muskie fishing. We were fishing on Lac Seul, which is known for its giant muskies. The conditions were finally in our favor, and we were excited to see what the day had in store for us.
We started off slow, working our lures through the weed beds. The strike window for muskies is not very big, so working slow is key. I was throwing a pause and jerk bait when suddenly, a muskie blindsided me and took the bait.
It was an incredible strike, and I could feel the power of the fish as it fought against me. After a thrilling battle, I finally landed the muskie. It was a great fish and a testament to the incredible fishing on Lac Seul.
But the excitement didn’t stop there. Linda Rice hooked into a monster muskie that put up an even bigger fight. It was a true giant, and we were in awe of its size. We quickly realized that Lac Seul truly holds some of the biggest muskies in the world.
Fishing for muskies is not easy. It requires patience, skill, and the right equipment. But when you finally hook into one of these incredible fish, it’s all worth it. The adrenaline rush and the sense of accomplishment are unmatched.
