There are a lot of places fishing has taken me over the years. Lakes, rivers, oceans… and even churches.
And when I stand in front of people and share my story, I always come back to two things that have shaped my life more than anything else—fishing and faith. Those are the cornerstones. That’s what it’s all about for me.
Now here’s the interesting part… those two worlds? They’re not as different as you might think.
Fishing Is Built on Faith
Think about it.
Every time you back the boat down the ramp, you’re stepping into the unknown. You don’t see what’s below the surface. You don’t know exactly how those fish are positioned, how they’re reacting, or if today’s the day they’re going to fire.
But you go anyway.
Why?
Because you’ve got hope.
You’ve studied the conditions. You’ve watched the weather. You know the structure, the season, the forage. And if you’ve put in the time—if you’ve learned your craft—you believe something good is going to happen.
That’s fishing.
And in many ways, that’s faith too.
“Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.”
Sound familiar?
The Greatest Fish Story Ever Told
One of my favorite stories—maybe the greatest fishing story ever told—comes straight out of the Bible.
Picture this.
A group of seasoned fishermen. Guys who knew their water. They’d been grinding all day… and caught nothing. Not a fish. They’re tired. They’re frustrated. They’re ready to pack it in.
We’ve all been there.
And then Jesus says something that probably didn’t make a whole lot of sense in that moment:
“Go back out. Try again. Throw your nets over there.”
Now imagine being Peter.
You’re thinking, “Lord, I’ve been doing this all day. I know this lake. I know this bite. It’s not happening.”
But here’s the key…
He goes anyway.
He makes the cast. Drops the net. Gives it one more shot.
And what happens?
They load the nets with more fish than they can handle—the biggest catch they’d ever experienced.
The Lesson Every Angler Understands
There’s something powerful in that story—and if you’re an angler, you feel it right away.
It’s not just about fish.
It’s about:
- Trusting when it doesn’t make sense
- Going back out when you’re ready to quit
- Believing there’s something there… even when you can’t see it
That’s the connection between fishing and faith.
It’s hope.
Where That Hope Comes From
Over the years, I’ve come to believe that real, lasting hope comes from one place—the Bible.
It’s not just another book.
It’s a guide. A foundation. A source of strength when things don’t go your way—on the water or in life. It speaks to every situation you’ll face. And there’s a reason it continues to impact people all over the world.
Just like fishing teaches patience, persistence, and humility… faith builds those same qualities in a deeper way.
See You on the Water
At the end of the day, fishing has given me a lifetime of incredible memories. But it’s also taught me lessons that go far beyond rods, reels, and fish.
Lessons about trust. About perseverance. About believing in something you can’t always see.
So whether you’re chasing walleyes on a windswept point, casting for smallmouth on a rocky flat, or just enjoying a quiet morning on the water…
Take a moment to appreciate it.
There’s something bigger going on out there.
From all of us at Angling Edge—have a great season. Enjoy every cast, every sunrise, every fish.
And I hope to see you out on the water… somewhere, sometime.
