Faith Speaking Across Denominations: A Unique Calling
As someone who frequently receives invitations to speak on faith at churches and various organisations across the country, I have the unique opportunity to share not only my personal testimony and walk with the Lord, but also insights into the intersection of fishing and faith—a combination that resonates with many.
These speaking engagements span across different denominational backgrounds, sometimes hosted in traditional church buildings and other times in more unconventional settings. Regardless of the venue, one thing remains constant: the message centers on the triune God—God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit.
How Do You See God?
I often begin by posing a few important questions to those I speak with. When you hear the word God, what image comes to mind? Do you see Him as the almighty and powerful Creator of heaven and earth? A God of unconditional love and forgiveness? 
Or perhaps, as some unfortunately perceive, a deity waiting for you to slip up so He can say, “Gotcha”?
These perceptions reveal a lot about our relationship with God and how we understand His nature.
The Image of Jesus: Cross or Comforter?
When I mention the name Jesus, what picture forms in your mind? For many people, the dominant image is of Christ on the cross—an iconic and powerful symbol of sacrifice. This image is widely recognized and deeply ingrained in Christian tradition, evoking a sense of reverence and solemnity.
The Holy Spirit: Misunderstood but Essential
Now, consider the name Holy Spirit. What do you see? While the concept of God as Creator and Jesus as Savior is commonly accepted, the mention of the Holy Spirit often prompts hesitation. Some people pull back, uncomfortable or uncertain about who the Holy Spirit is or what He does. The reaction tends to be, “I’m not ready for that yet. Don’t get me into that stuff.”
And yet, the Holy Spirit is a vital and active part of the body of Christ. In Scripture, Jesus Himself says, “I will send you a Comforter,” referring to the Holy Spirit. He is our helper, guide, and source of spiritual strength.
Digging Deeper: Understanding the Role of the Holy Spirit
To gain a clearer picture of the Holy Spirit’s role, I encourage you to open the Bible to 1 Corinthians. There, you’ll find rich teachings that illuminate the function and purpose of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer.
A close friend of mine once shared a thought that stuck with me: “The Holy Spirit doesn’t get the credit He deserves in the Bible.” While God the Father and Jesus Christ are often in the spotlight, the Holy Spirit tends to be overlooked.
But make no mistake—He’s a very active presence, knocking on the doors of many hearts and working tirelessly in ways we may not always see or understand.
A Challenge and a Blessing
That insight resonated deeply with me because it’s true. The Holy Spirit deserves recognition for the powerful work He does. My hope is that you’ll take the time to open God’s Word and seek a fuller understanding of who the Holy Spirit is and how He operates in your life. For some, this journey will be challenging. Others will embrace it with open arms. And some may remain skeptical—and that’s okay.
