Top 5 Artificial Lures for Walleyes in Sunset Country

If someone asked me to narrow down my tackle box to just five artificial presentations for catching walleyes in Ontario’s Sunset Country, I honestly wouldn’t hesitate. Over decades of fishing this incredible region, I’ve learned that you don’t need hundreds of different lures—you simply need confidence in a handful of proven fish catchers.

Sunset Country is loaded with lakes that hold healthy populations of walleyes. Whether you’re fishing expansive shield lakes, stained back bays, rocky points, current neck-downs, or sprawling weed flats, these are the baits I reach for time and time again.

1. Jigging Rap-Style Baits

If you’ve followed Angling Edge over the years, you already know how much confidence I’ve had in Jigging Rap-style lures.

These compact, balanced swimming baits trigger reaction strikes unlike almost anything else. Instead of simply dragging or swimming a lure through the water, you’re making it dart aggressively away from the fish before returning to center. That erratic movement often convinces even neutral walleyes to attack.

They’re outstanding when:

  • Fishing rocky humps
  • Working offshore reefs
  • Targeting suspended fish
  • Covering deep structure quickly

Many anglers think of them as strictly cold-water baits, but I’ve caught walleyes on them from spring through late fall.

X-Rap

2. X-Rap Jerkbaits

The Rapala X-Rap has become one of my favorite search tools.

When walleyes are feeding aggressively around rock shorelines, emerging weeds, or shallow reefs, few presentations cover water as efficiently as a suspending jerkbait.

The beauty of an X-Rap is its versatility.

You can:

  • Snap it aggressively
  • Twitch it slowly
  • Pause it for several seconds
  • Speed it up to locate active fish

Often those long pauses are exactly what convinces a following walleye to finally strike.

3. Deep-Diving Rapala PXR Mavrik

This one surprises some anglers.

Many people don’t immediately think of a deep-diving jerkbait when they think about walleyes, but they should.

A deep-running Mavrik excels when fish are relating to deeper rock edges, breaklines, and submerged structure.

Instead of vertically fishing every location, you can efficiently cover large sections of productive water until you locate active fish.

Once you contact fish, you can always slow down with more precise presentations.

Sometimes trolling or casting a deep-diving hard bait simply finds the biggest fish in the system.

4. Moontail Hair Jigs

Hair jigs have never gone out of style.

In fact, many experienced walleye anglers believe they’ve become even more effective because so few fishermen throw them consistently anymore.

A quality Moontail jig offers an incredibly natural presentation.

Hair breathes in the water, even when you’re barely moving the bait.

That subtle movement can be absolutely deadly on pressured fish that have seen every plastic swimbait and live bait rig imaginable.

I especially like using hair jigs when fish are feeding around current, rocky shorelines, and clean-bottom transitions.

Neon Moon Eye Jig

5. Moon Eye Jigs with Soft Plastics

The final piece of my essential tackle selection is a quality Moon Eye jig paired with the right soft plastic.

Look for jig heads with:

  • Flat sides
  • Large eyes
  • Balanced designs

Then pair them with either:

  • Split-tail minnows
  • Boot-tail swimbaits

Some of my favorite choices come from Big Bite Baits and CrushCity plastics. Both offer excellent action while maintaining durability throughout a long day of fishing.

The key isn’t overcomplicating your presentation.

Simply match the jig weight to the depth and wind conditions, keep contact with the bottom whenever possible, and let the plastic do the work.

Keep It Simple

One mistake I see many anglers make is bringing far too much tackle on a Canadian fishing trip.

The reality is that walleyes aren’t nearly as complicated as we sometimes make them out to be.

If you pack these five lure categories, you’ll be prepared for virtually every situation Sunset Country throws your way.

  • Jigging Rap-style bait
  • X-Rap jerkbait
  • Deep-diving Maverick
  • Moontail hair jig
  • Moon Eye jig paired with quality soft plastics

Those few presentations allow you to fish vertically, horizontally, aggressively, or finesse—all while covering every major walleye pattern you’ll encounter.

One of the great lessons fishing has taught me is that confidence catches fish. When you truly believe in a handful of proven lures, you fish them better. You make better decisions, stay more focused, and ultimately catch more walleyes.

If you’re planning a trip to Sunset Country, don’t overthink your tackle selection. Bring these proven artificial presentations, learn when each one shines, and spend your time fishing instead of constantly changing lures.

More often than not, you’ll discover exactly what I’ve learned over the years—you can catch all the walleyes you need with just a handful of well-chosen baits.
